Realistic Chair Render

In this project, I was tasked in rendering a chair for a client and illustrating it to make it look real. I experimented with different tones, blur, gradients, and layers, working around the chair and editing opacity if needed. This chair was simple to select due to it having a dark color compared to the light wall behind it. It stood out and that made things easier to be rendered. Specific parts of the chair were also grouped, and layering/stacking helped in the process and made work quicker.


Grouping and Layering:

The process for this illustration was efficient and well executed. I made multiple groups based off each part of the chair – this made things much more easier to handle. I also played around with the layers putting one on top of the other to stack one on top of the other. Coloring and shading were also made possible by playing with gradients and the colors as accurate as it is with all the highlights and shadows. The blur I also played around with to make it as accurate as the image. The “legs” of the chair I placed into sub-groups that is also part of the whole bottom half of the chair. This was took the longest to illustrate due to the leg area of the chair being dark and tough to see. I managed to still create an accurate path. I also decided not to use the pen tool for the whole thing. Instead of tracing, I decided to manipulate shapes instead, starting with rectangles, circles, squares, etc. and then grabbing the end points and placing them where I want them to be, then adding the keypoints to further manipulate the shape to be the same as the actual chair.

Final Touches & Details

The last parts I needed to finish were the backrest and the details of the chair. The backrest I did like the other parts of the chair by manipulating shapes to make workflow efficient and fast. I took advantage of layering and placing parts behind the back or in the front. I also used the pathfinder tool to merge the backrest with it’s other layers to show the padding on the lower back. Afterwards, I added the finishing touches and added specific details. These being: shadows, blur, highlights, and color tones to make the bed look realistically rendered.


This project allowed me to create something that looks like a real item. I further enhanced my illustration skills through the realistic rendering of the “gaming” chair and figured out better, more efficient ways of making paths other than tracing. I also was able to use blur effects and other aspects to render this chair to look real. Overall, the render left me satisfied because of how well the colors blended and the parts accurately illustrated.
